Al-Khalil, Aug 16, IRNA -- A Palestinian family from the West Bank town of al-Khalil has accused the Israeli authorities of indulging in ''sinister and Nazi-like behaviors'' by forcing their son to swallow a chemical substance that causes impotence and complete hair-loss.

The family of Zuhair Eskafi, 28, complained that Israeli policemen and interrogators had forced their son to swallow certain tablets that cause his head and facial hair to disappear.

The family asserted that their son was in perfect health when he was arrested by the Zionist army a few months ago.

Some Palestinian doctors believed that tablets in question were anti-cancerous agents.

The family said the criminal act was perpetrated in the month of April this year at the notorious Nafha prison.

Interestingly, a similar case was reported by a Palestinian lady in May and the victim in this case was a young Palestinian woman detained in an Israel jail in connection with alleged anti-occupation activities.

Her family appealed to the world public opinion, the Red Cross, and all human rights groups to condemn and stop the sinister Israeli practices which are in violation of the Geneva Convention and international humanitarian law.

The Red Cross office in Hebron, which had been informed of the two cases, refused to give any information on the present health conditions of the two Palestinian prisoners.

Israel officially sanctions physical and psychological torture against political detainees.

The torture methods used in Israel include beating, sleep deprivation, solitary confinement, threats of murder and food deprivation.

SANDRA CISNEROS

     I am currently learing about Literary Genres as one of my school modules and I am particularly intrigued by a Mexican-American writer; Sandra Cisneros. She is a writer as well as a chicana, which means a Mexican-American feminist.

     She is a unique writer because she challenges the conventional idea of feminity. In her books, she depicts a vehement "Female Language" to stand up against men's and society's oppression and exploitation of women. She also expresses her loathe for the American and European culture which puts women in their place and limits them in terms of opportunities and personal ambition.

     In one of her stories, "Never Marry a Mexican", she depicts how a mexican women, despite being The Other Women is being exploited and subjugated by an American lover. But the woman still triumphs at the end and overpower the man due to her own strength, independence and her power in writing. I would definitely recomend her stories because it compels us to stand up against racial and gender prejudice.

In 1990 the US government, with the world in tow, had a falling out with Saddam Hussein over Kuwait. It was not so much that Hussein's character had changed; as Noam Chomsky has pointed out, "Saddam's worst crimes were committed when he was a favored ally and trading partner of the US." Overnight Saddam Hussein became known to the West as "the new Hitler." This title was not invoked by his human rights abuses, for these had long been known, but by his threat to Western economic interests in oil-rich Kuwait.

The first response to Iraqi aggression was to impose the most comprehensive economic sanctions the modern world has ever known. Nothing got out of the country and nothing came in without the permission of the UN Security Council, made up of The United States, Britain, Russia, China, and France. Iraq was a desert economy especially vulnerable to embargoes as they are dependent on imports and clean water.

Next, in January of 1991, the United States and its allies launched Operation Desert Storm, a month of continuous and brutal bombardment. When the depleted uranium dust from the exploding missiles of the West settled, it seemed that overkill was an understatement. The punishment of an entire people was just beginning. The bombing left the infrastructure shattered and the sanctions remained in place, affecting the lives of millions of Iraqi civilians that, before the Gulf War, had known the highest health and medical standards in the region. The gutting of the electrical, sewage, and water systems would combine with the denial of repair parts and adequate medical supplies, to make even the most curable of water-borne diseases a death sentence.

Media coverage of the situation in Iraq would imply that Saddam is the only person living in Iraq, or that Iraq's 22 million people are all named Saddam. Sanctions are supposed to target the Iraqi regime, but instead, affect the very young, the very old, and the poor. The sanctions have taken the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians since 1991. Popular support for this policy of deprivation and violence is eroding, but still the US and its closest ally Britain, though increasingly isolated in their position, remain steadfast supporters of the dead-end policy. Standard apologetics for the economic sanctions seem to ring more hollow every day. Saddam Hussein is strengthened by the policy. Sanctions have made survival the focus of the common people of Iraq, leaving them no time or resources for the popular uprising that the US government hopes the sanctions will inspire. We are told by American officials that this price must be paid to keep the world safe from future weapons of mass destruction. But according to UNICEF, loss of life directly from sanctions is six times that of Hiroshima. The US-led sanctions claim the lives of an estimated five thousand children every month.

This war is not over. The US continues to bomb. They continue sanctions. As the US and Britain engage in efforts to continue this cruel policy, we see international support for sanctions crumbling before our eyes. France, Russia, China, Malaysia, Yemen, Turkey and Jordan are a few of the countries that have moved recently to end sanctions, with other countries following suit. It is time for the US and British Governments to end this campaign of death and destruction, and we must prevent them from continuing or increasing efforts to continue sanctions. Ten years have passed and some estimates claim that over a million innocent people have died. Tens of thousands of American soldiers are sick and dying from the depleted uranium-coated munitions we used during the Gulf War. The US has earned itself a fearsome reputation as the rogue superpower. We are breeding the hate we claim to be protecting ourselves from.

Real Men Don't Rape

A couple of months ago, a bit before the war started, Bush said in one of his speeches that he believed that it was good that people were expressing their opinions on the war. He also said that even though France was not in support of the war, that was okay. He said that France was a friend and that they were just having a disagreement over the war. Well, Bush, you are a lying hypocrite.

We, the youth, did express our opinion about the war, and all you did was IGNORE us. And, when you could take it no longer, YOU PUT MORE COPS AT OUR PROTESTS. WE WERE BEATEN, SPRAYED WITH TEAR GAS AND ARRESTED. How dare you? We were only expressing ourselves. How dare you let the cops brutalize us? HOW DARE YOU TURN THE PEOPLE WHO ARE SUPPOSED TO PROTECT US AGAINST US? Then, you and the cops said OVER AND OVER on t.v that we were wasting your time, that, instead of watching us, you could be somewhere else protecting someone from real danger. a masked killer, dressed in lies,

It looks as if the world pressure brought to bear when Sharon made major incursions into Palestinian areas has taught him to do things less publicly. Most of the world media is now silent about the daily violence to which Palestinians are subjected. Israel is attempting to put the blame for its violence on the Palestinians, threatening reprisals if there is unrest. Palestinians fear that a major atrocity against them is being prepared.

FEMINIST LIBERALIZATION

     Feminism has been one of the most important and radical movements in ideas and is society over the last forty years. Yet, the roots of modern feminist and post-feminist thought stretch back much further than the 1960s. The origins of today's feminism lie in the late eighteenth century and the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries saw major advances in the struggle for women's rights.

     Before we delve further into the history and the evolution of the feminist liberalization, what exactly is being defined as feminism? Feminism is a way of looking at the world, which women occupy from the perspective of women. It has as its central focus the concept of patriarchy, which can be described as a system of male authority, which oppresses women through its social, political and economical institutions. In other words, it is the advocacy of women's rights, or of the movement for the advancement and emancipation of women.

     There are a myriad of ways in which women have been suppressed in the past such as being deprived of an education, being forced to fulfill their roles as wives, child bearers and domestic caretakers and therefore, not being allowed to pursue a career. Even for those who get a job, the glass ceiling is an inevitable phenomenon that limits the prospects of advancement for women as well as not being able to attain equal wages as their male counterparts. Even in modern day times, sexual harassment and discrimination exist in the workplace, not to mention crimes such as rape and the illegal sex trade of forced prostitution.

     There are even more severe forms of oppression in ancient clutures, for instance; in India where the wife is burnt alive together with the husband if he dies first, in Japan where the wife must walk three steps behind the man as a sign of respect and submission, in China where foot-binding is practiced as a sign that the women will not rebel and retaliate and in the Middle East where the ancient barbaric custom of female circumsicion and genital mutilation is still rampant. All these facts underpinning the argument that female oppression still exist are what makes it necessary for the rise of the feminist liberalization.

     The demand for women's rights that began to be voiced in the late eighteenth century forms the basis of modern feminism. Women's voices were first raised in unison during the French Revolution in which many took part. After a long struggle and battle, it was not until 1928 that women won the rights to vote. Soon, the women's movement was progressing worldwide. Betty Friedan set up the National Organization of Women, to debate issue on sex discrimination. This women's movement slowly led to the birth of the Feminist Liberalization.

RACIAL DISCRIMINATION

     Undeniably, we live in a racist world. At recurrent intervals throughout history, human beings have tended to despise and dislike people they see as different from themselves. The difference might be one of language, religion or social class. It might be a matter of physical characteristics, such as skin color.

     I want to focus on the racist attitudes of Europeans and the people of European origin - "white people"- in the twentieth century, and about how other peopel such as Africans, have struggled against this racism. White people have had a long tradition of using black slaves, which they justified by seeing Africans as inferior beings. The Africans were dominated, exploited, subjugated while the white people regarded themselves as superior to all ethnic groups. This sense of superiority was based on their dominance which they achieved across teh world, be it in political control, warfare, science and technology.

     besides slavery, there were many forms of racial segregation that existed. For instance, there were schools, public facilities and public transport that were labelled 'white only' or 'coloured'. A black person was not gained admittance and not allowed to enter a 'white only' designated zone. In the mid 1950s, a baptist minister, Martin Luther King Jr. emerged as an inspirational leader of the black civil rights movement. He led a year-long boycott of Mongomery's bus company, which ended with the supreme court outlawing bus segregation in Alabama.

     King advocated non-violent civil disobedience. In 1957, he founded the Southern Christian leadership conference and embarked on a campaign of defiance against unjust laws and regulations. His principles inspired students to begin their own campaign at the segregated lunch counters and in waiting rooms and other facilities across the South. In 1960, the courage of these students, persisting in the face of violent attack by racists and the white authorities, attracted attention worldwide.

THE CHIAPAS REBELLION

The year 1994 marked a significant time in history of the struggle for land and democracy by the Chiapas peasants. The Zapatista rebellion exposed the social injustice and political repression faced by the region's Mayan population and their conflict against federal bureaucracy and landed elites as well as ethnic and class segregation. Within the Mexican state itself, the adverse effect of the neoliberal economic policies led to the Zapatista revolution. Already in existence, were three peasant organizations that had been formed independently of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (RPI). The importance of their political struggle and social rebellion had much to do with establishing the meaning of citizenship. The Zapatista Revolution has generated awareness for the Chiapas citizens on issues such as ethnicity, gender, and land distribution and most importantly on their rights to live and participate as an equal and valued member of a political community.-ZapatA

Mexican Anarchism

Although most attention on Mexico has focused on the libertarian aspects of the EZLN, a consciously anarchist movement is also coming into existence there. This emerging anarchist movement is disorganised and small but has a rich history. It was born in the last century under the influence of Rodakonoty and Chauvin, and later Ricardo Flores-Magon who is still a popular figure.

Groups today range from the counter-cultural Anti-Authoritarian Revolutionary Youth (JAR), to the Motin group which seeks to create the conditions for social anarchism. Throughout the whole of Mexico there are about 30 groups spread out in a dozen towns with 400 to 500 militants. In 1994, inspired by events in Chiapas, the Self-Management Libertarian Union (ULA) was born bringing together individuals from JAR, Motin and a social library. There are plans for a national journal put together by about a dozen groups spread out over five towns.

On May 1st 1995 when the official unions refused to organise a May Day march, Mexico saw its biggest protest march since 1968 with 1.5 million people demanding:
* an end to NAFTA,
* a rise in salaries,
* the re-employment of workers sacked during strikes,
* political freedom,
* support for the EZLN.

The anarchist contingent brought together some 3,000 people on this march.

Independent unions are appearing in several towns and are beginning to draw thousands of members, who have carried out sporadic actions at Ford, in telecommunications and in the oil industry. Some unions give libertarian ideas a warm welcome. In December 1995 a meeting took place between militants of the French Anarchist Federation and a dozen other Mexican anarchist groups in the premises of the Independent Textile Workers Union.
